Try it over IM or email first if you don’t feel comfortably going in-person… or when you’re handing in work to them, just start chatting about the office, what they do, etc. and get into a casual conversation like that

Hi,

I am finding it hard to approach new people in the office I have never met before and asking to join them for lunch. Besides lunch, is there any other way I can approach someone at work? Although I’m new I feel like just walking up to a desk and stirring up a conversation would be kind of awkward and cause a bad first impression.
