Sales & Trading vs. Investment Banking, Part 2: Lifestyle, Co-Workers, Pay & Exit Opportunities

We wrap up our series on Sales & Trading vs. Investment Banking with this podcast, focusing on the lifestyle, your co-workers, pay, and exit opportunities.

Whereas Part 1 was all about recruiting, this one’s all about what happens when you actually get the job – and we go into subjects like pay and bonuses in both fields and what “models and bottles” means for traders.

Once again, Jerry’s the expert here so he’s the “interviewee.”

Bottle Service, How to Become a Guest Star on Entourage, Buy-Side Lifestyle, and How NOT to Be a Tool When Networking… and More Q&A

Bottle serviceWith summer internships drawing to a close and another round of full-time recruiting about to start, I’m getting a lot of questions on last-minute networking, how to prepare for interviews if you’ve had an internship, and what to do if you’re not getting a full-time offer.

And then there’s the usual bout of bottle service, “lifestyle” and related questions…

Buy-Side Lifestyle

1. I heard that when you get into private equity, you instantly start dating models and everyone from taxi drivers to restaurant chefs begins to worship you. Does anything else cool happen?

Investment Banking: Italy Edition

Continuing our series on finance in different regions of the world, today we go to Italy and hear from a reader who completed an MBA program there and then had an internship this past summer at a local Italian investment bank.

We cover a broad set of topics, including how he decided to study in Europe, how he applied and got into a top MBA program there, and then how he used that experience to land his banking internship.

He also had some very interesting thoughts on networking, especially when you’re going for international positions – something on many of your minds these days.

This interview turned out to be quite long (over 3,000 words), but it’s full of insight so I decided to keep the entire transcript intact.
