Tired of Getting Interviews… but Never “Sealing the Deal” and Landing Investment Banking Offers?
Discover How to Ace Your Interviews and Land Every Investment Banking Offer You Want
I don’t need to tell you the stats: it’s tougher than ever before to break into investment banking. But just in case you forgot, here they are again: less than 1% of those who apply for investment banking jobs in a given year get in.
It’s hard enough to even get noticed by banks. I can tell you about that one first hand, because I hand-selected resumes from over 10 schools.
But here’s the scary part: even if you get an interview, your odds of getting an offer don’t go up.
We might pick 50-100 candidates to interview out of 500 resumes (10-20%); typically we award offers to less than 2%.
Just think about the odds: out of 500 applicants, 50 might be selected for interviews… and fewer than 10 receive offers.
Does any of this sound familiar?
- You’re not even sure where to start preparing - your resume? Fit questions? Technical questions? Learning all the details of financial modeling and the Vault guide?
- You get an interview… and then stumble through basic technical questions, with the interviewer staring off into space wondering why he’s even there.
- You respond to every question with the “right” answer, everyone at the office “wants you on the team” but you still don’t get any offers.
I’ve been both an interviewee and interviewer, so I have a good idea of what it takes to ace an investment banking interview.
And the worst possible outcome is to sit there struggling with no one to point you in the right direction.
How I Almost Didn’t Get into Investment Banking
After 6 months of desperate struggle to actually land an interview, I managed to screw up my first interview so badly you’d probably laugh (if you could watch the replay).
“Walk me through your resume.”
I responded with a blank stare and fumbled through my work experience… searching for the right words to impress my interviewer.
Getting through one interview was painful enough, but I had to endure an entire day of humiliation.
As the day progressed, things only got worse… when it came to technical questions, well, I hadn’t even taken a single accounting or finance class in college.
So it was a bit of an uphill battle.
Needless to say, I didn’t get an offer. An entire day wasted with no offer to show for it.
After my first interview “experience” I decided I couldn’t afford to waste another hard-earned interview.
I only had a few weeks to my next interview, so I spent the time preparing and reading every single guide out there. I hadn’t had a single accounting class before, but that didn’t prevent me from buying accounting books and reading up on everything; I hadn’t studied finance before, but I struggled through Excel and creating models of my own.
Success!
It took weeks of intense preparation, but my interviewing skills finally began to improve.
When recruiting season was over and done with, I had managed to get 3 offers.
The only problem: I wasted weeks of my own time preparing by reading out-dated, irrelevant guides and fumbling through accounting and financial modeling by myself without anyone to guide me.
When I started working, I found myself in the position of interviewing others for investment banking jobs.
Friends started coming to me, asking for my help preparing - they wanted mock interviews, help with technical questions and everything I could tell them about how to impress interviewers and get offers.
I helped them get into not only investment banking, but also private equity and hedge funds as well. Some of them were switching in from related fields, like consulting or equity research; others were simply trying to get internships or get in out of undergraduate.
Finally one day, one of them said, “Wow, you’re really good at this… you should turn it into a business!”
And so I did.
The Problem with Those Other Interview Guides / Services
Since I too went through the investment banking recruiting process not too long ago, I’m familiar with the existing resources…. and the problems they have.
- PROBLEM #1: Existing guides are not written by bankers or anyone in the industry. And if you look at some of those “mock interview” services, needless to say, they don’t have real bankers asking you questions.
- PROBLEM #2: Most of those interview guides have questions that are completely outdated (has the Vault guide been updated since 2002?) and no longer relevant. And sometimes the answers are just plain wrong - not a good combination!
- PROBLEM #3: Most existing guides just give you a laundry list of questions, without telling you what’s important or what to focus on. Your background greatly influences the questions you get; someone with banking experience will get completely different questions from someone who has a liberal arts background and no finance experience.
So if you want to find a service that gives you exactly what you need to break into investment banking and cuts out everything else, good luck. Let me know how it goes (but I already know what the results will be, of course).
“It is Hard to Put in Words Everything You’ve Done”“In all honesty, it is hard to put in words everything you’ve done through just your resume critique and mock interviews. And I really don’t understand how other people do not use your services, especially with the way the markets are right now. (Or maybe they do and I just don’t know!)” -Neil Chen, University Student Breaking Into Investment Banking |
My Offer: A Quality Mock Interview Service
I’m offering, quite simply, the single best way to ace your investment banking interviews.
Here’s what you get:
- A 30-minute mock interview followed by 30 minutes of me critiquing your performance, saying what you did right and wrong and how I would change your responses.
- The interview can be focused on anything you want - “fit” questions, “technical” questions, or something more specific such as how to craft your all-important “story,” discussing your summer internship, LBO modeling, valuation, or accounting.
- You can ask me questions on anything following your interview - how to best position yourself for banking, anything networking-related, which groups are best to work in - anything on your mind is fair game.
I’ve conducted all types of interviews - some of my customers have focused strictly on technical questions and discussing their finance experience, while others have concentrated more on the “fit” side.
Still other prospective bankers have simply asked me questions on everything from positioning themselves for business school or private equity, and even questions on topics such as background checks and how to negotiate offers.
Whether you want one interview, multiple interviews, or a Q&A session, this is your solution.
Ok, But What Are You Not Telling Me?
As I do with the other services I offer, I want to note that going through mock interviews does not guarantee you an investment banking job.
It’s just like any other long-term goal, whether it’s getting in shape or learning a language: there are many ways you can accelerate your progress, but nothing guarantees results unless you also put in time and effort.
Even if you have top-notch interviewing skills, you still need to get noticed in the first place with a superb resume, and you still have to apply what I teach you. It’s not enough to be a passive participant.
Is This Only for Investment Banking?
I offer mock interview services for both investment banking and private equity interviews. At this time I do not do interviews for other fields such as equity research, asset management or sales & trading.
Is This for All Levels Within Banking, or Just Analysts?
It’s for entry-level positions - Analysts and Associates. I have conducted over 100 entry-level interviews so I focus on this market. At this time I do not offer mock interviews for higher-level positions such as VPs and above.
What If I’m Applying for Jobs Outside the US?
The interview process is similar at banks, regardless of where you’re located. The main difference is that rather than being asked about the Dow Jones or S&P 500, you might be asked about FTSE, DAX or the Nikkei.
The style and structure of questions is the same; the terminology is just different.
Note: Outside the US you may get interviews in languages besides English. At this time I only offer interviews in English.
Do You Offer Special Deals on Multiple Sessions or Combined Interview/Resume Packages?
Yes. Simply contact me to find out more - the deal you get depends on what you’re looking for.
I also offer discounted rates if you’re looking for a Q&A session rather than a full-fledged mock interview.
Do You Offer In-Person Training or Interviews?
Yes, assuming you live close to me or are willing to travel. If I’m in another part of the country or part of the world, I’ll post a notice on the front page as well as on this page notifying everyone.
For rates and logistical information, please contact me.
What If I Don’t Live Near You? What If I’m Outside the US?
I conduct all interviews over Skype - so I would call your land line, mobile, or Skype account and we would conduct the interview over the phone instead.
If you’re concerned about being in a different time zone, I am happy to work around your schedule to accommodate and find a time that works for both of us. My scheduling is flexible.
I Want to Order Both Resume Editing and a Mock Interview - Can I Wait Until I Have Interviews Before Paying for Both?
Yes, and you will still receive a discount if you choose to order mock interviews or any other services.
I understand that you don’t want to invest your money until you have interviews lined up, and this is completely fine by me.
“I Highly Recommend It to Anyone Who’s Interested in Investment Banking, Private Equity and Anything Related to Wall Street.”“He is a great listener, who provides excellent advice and feedback. He is able to answer questions only a person who’s been through the recruiting and interviewing process could and shares his and his colleagues’ stories to help you. Overall, he was attentive, insightful, specific, and constructive. His phone consulting is both comprehensive and personalized, and I highly recommend it to anyone who’s interested in investment banking, private equity, and anything related to Wall Street.” -Stephen Wang, Investment Banking Analyst Breaking Into Private Equity |
An hour-long mock interview session with me is a $197 investment.
I’ll be the first one to admit it: that is a substantial amount of money.
This is a service for those who are serious about breaking into finance and getting the most competitive jobs in the corporate world.
And before you think that’s an exorbitant price, just consider how much money you’re losing by not perfecting your interview skills: even an entry-level Analyst makes over $100,000 per year. On the buy-side, entry-level Associates make over $200,000. And once you hit VP level, you’re looking at at least $500,000 per year.
The money you invest in an investment banking mock interview is not like the money you spend buying that new plasma TV or on a new car - this is not an “expense” but an investment in your future.
A new car lose value over time, but improving your interview skills only makes you more and more valuable.
I also offer discounts for those who are considering multiple sessions, in-person training or who want to do a combined resume review and interview, so please contact me to find out more about those.
60-Day 100% Money-Back Guarantee
I understand you might be nervous about spending money on a mock interview and not being sure whether you’ll be able to ace your interviews - so I offer a 60-day 100% money-back guarantee.
If you’re not satisfied for any reason, simply ask for your money back - no questions asked.
