To be honest, I wouldn't worry too much about preparing and frantically trying to learn modeling and all in a short time period - they will teach you everything anyway.

Probably the most effective thing to do is speak with previous summer analysts or friends who have done it and see what to expect from them.

Yeah that's viable, but you probably would not come in as higher than an Associate unless you work at a startup that really takes off (e.g. the next Google).

Either equity research or IBD works, some VCs actually prefer equity research because it is more about following the markets etc.

Have you seen the same episodes of Entourage I have? Ari Gold is a slave to his clients, at least Vince. Remember in Season 1 when he runs off from his wife at the movies to go secure a deal for Vince?

He constantly sacrifices his personal life and family to close deals. So although there may be less gruntwork involved, it's still a big sacrifice.

To get to a VC, would this route be feasible - tech consulting > tech emerging tech startup > b school > equity research in emerging tech/markets > VC?

In place of equity research, would being an IBD associate at a BB bank be a better option?

Thanks in advance, again!

Even at more senior levels, investment bankers are far less glamorous versions of Ari Gold than are actual agents. Ari Gold wouldn't spend all that time doing intensive diligence to win a bake-off before running an intensive, prolonged sale process (and hosting an enormous data room) just to get a buyer across the finish line.

I wish I knew this lingo when I first started out in equity research and needed to interact with the investment bankers. Life would have been so much easier had I understood what it all meant for me.
